Low Literacy and Therapy:
The Hidden Epidemic

Our trainings are engaging and dynamic, providing high-quality, small group sessions that prioritize skill practice over passive information delivery.

40-50 percent of adults in the USA have basic or low levels of literacy in English. This includes native and non-native speakers of English. Many have become adept at hiding this from others, but it has a tremendous impact on daily life--including therapy. When therapy falls flat, sometimes it is due to a mismatch between the interventions and a client's literacy skills.

This workshop will cover how to identify if a client may have low levels of literacy, how to adapt therapeutic paperwork and interventions for clients with low literacy, and how to empower clients in both their mental health and literacy journeys.

Upon Completion, Participants will be able to:

  • Name three clues that a client may struggle with literacy

  • Understand two ways that low literacy levels can impact the traditional therapeutic process

  • Identify three ways to modify interventions to make them more accessible to those with low literacy skills

  • Increase readability of documents using federal readability guidelines

  • Explain the differences and intersections between low literacy, reading disabilities, and English language learning
